Independent Research and Fact-Checking Methodology

Fact Check

Fact Check is a Tirto.id product that consists of two formats. The first format is the Fact Check . In this format, we conduct a direct comparison between the source’s statement and official data, either in real-time or through special articles published at least once a week. Real-time fact checks are conducted directly at special or specific moments deemed important to the public, such as regional leader debates and presidential speeches.

The second format is the Data Check . Data Check is an analysis of issues developing in the community. Based on these issues, the research team will verify using official data and write a short report in the form of an analysis ( Mild Report ). We publish the Data Check at least once a week.

In terms of sources used for Fact Check, Tirto.id has levels that serve as guidelines for verification. The first level, data sources come from the National/Regional Statistics Agency, Central/Regional Government, Stock Exchange, and company reports. Data sources at the second level come from global bodies such as the UN, World Bank, IMF, ASEAN, OECD, and others. Meanwhile, for the third level, data sources come from verified scientific journals such as MIS Quarterly and The Quarterly Journal of Economics, as well as major consultancies such as Nielsen, BCG, and McKinsey.

In selecting claims for fact-checking, we choose issues with broad impacts on society. We adhere to the fact-checking method based on the sources mentioned above. If confirmation is necessary, we will also do so in accordance with applicable journalistic principles and ethics.

The sources of the data used in this fact-checking can be displayed in specific infographics or visualizations. Furthermore, links to the data used are hyperlinked within the article . Fact

-checking is the responsibility of the Tirto.id research team . However, the research team also collaborates with the editorial team in its implementation.

Independent Research

Independent Research is a survey conducted directly by the Tirto.id research team . The survey methodology used varies, adjusted to the research objectives and the type of respondents. For each survey result, the methodology, characteristics and number of respondents, research area, and implementation time will be published along with the report.

If readers have suggestions, ideas, responses, or rebuttals to the Fact Check and Independent Research claims on Tirto.id , readers can send them to factcheck@tirto.id . All corrections to the Fact Check and Data Check articles will be carried out according to the procedures stated on the Cyber Media Guidelines page .

If there is a major correction related to changes to the main claim in the Fact Check article, the editors will provide a ‘[REVISION]’ note at the beginning of the article title followed by a detailed explanation of the correction made at the bottom of the article.
